Veins in the arms and legs carry blood back to the heart after delivering oxygen and nutrients to the body. In the legs, blood returns through two main systems—superficial veins near the skin and deeper veins within the muscles, which handle most of the blood flow. Because blood must move upward against gravity, veins rely on muscle movement and tiny one-way valves to keep circulation flowing properly.
